Mr. John Gray
John helps clients regain mobility and function, while managing pain, to return to the activities they enjoy doing the most.
By using an evidence-based approach toward motor control training, he helps his clients, who range from children with scoliosis to world-class athletes, recover from a wide spectrum of impairments – from degenerative joint diseases to neurological and metabolic conditions.
During his over 25-year-long career, John has trained with internationally renowned experts in England, the United States, Australia, and Asia. He is trained in Wellspring’s CancerSmart rehabilitation course for health professionals and is BoneFit trained through Osteoporosis Canada. He also has completed courses in the Mulligan method, Myofascial Pain Syndromes, and Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS).
John has been a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and is published in several highly respected scientific journals in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy. He has also co-authored a chapter in “The Functional Training Handbook” on the biomechanical considerations for injury prevention and performance improvement in Weightlifting.
John has an extensive history of client performance and results. He has been the Sports Conditioning Consultant to the University of Toronto Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team, FIVB world-tour women’s beach volleyball athletes, and national caliber athletes in archery, alpine skiing, and tennis. He has helped even more Master’s level competitive athletes in sports including powerlifting, triathlon, and running. He has previously been both a competitor and coach in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.
Despite this, the majority of clients John helps are people who have been suffering pain since an injury or after surgery, with functional limitations that they have not been able to overcome despite seeking different types of professional help. His comprehensive approach to the client’s needs ensures that he fits the treatment to the cause of the pain or dysfunction, rather than applying a standard treatment regardless of the person’s diagnosis.
John holds both a Master’s degree in Biomechanics from Queen’s University and an Honours Bachelor’s degree of Physical and Health Education from the University of Toronto. Before returning to his professional practice, John pursued a Ph.D. degree in Spine Biomechanics under the supervision of Dr. Stuart McGill, where he was responsible for the operation of the Spine Biomechanics laboratory and contributed to research projects studying the biomechanics of low back pain.
